The fourth episode of the FIGO Podcast unpacks the Cartagena Declaration, which asserts that access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) is a basic and non-negotiable human right of every woman and girl in the world.

FIGO’s Division of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Wellbeing – comprising FIGO’s Committee on Contraception, Committee on Safe Abortion, and Committee on Reproductive Medicine, Endocrinology and Infertility – developed the Cartagena Declaration during FIGO 2022 Regional Congress held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, in November 2022.

In this podcast, Division Director Ivonne Diaz and Committee Chairs Aparna Sridhar, Teresa Bombas, and Jaideep Malhotra discuss the imperative need to SRHR as human rights to ensure that all women and girls have complete bodily autonomy and access to the appropriate sexual and reproductive health care - including access to safe abortion and fertility care.

“In an era marked by global challenges to women's sexual and reproductive health, the imperative for professional organisations related to reproductive health to unite is undeniable. With the Cartagena Declaration, we urge these organisations to leverage their collective expertise, resources, and advocacy power to advance the wellbeing of women worldwide. Together, they can champion evidence-based practices, disseminate critical knowledge, influence policy, and promote equitable access to quality healthcare. This declaration not only strengthens the voice of FIGO but also ensures that the diverse healthcare needs of women across the globe are met comprehensively, ultimately fostering a healthier and more empowered global community of women”

- Aparna Sridhar, Chair of FIGO Committee on Contraception
